According to a recent Nielsen Wire study, retail mobile websites are more popular than retail mobile apps.
The study is based on shopping habits of 5,000 U.S. volunteers who own smartphones. According to the study, Amazon is the most popular retail mobile website, and during the 2011 holiday season, 60 percent of smartphone users used the top five retail mobile apps and websites to purchase items. These top five retailers include Amazon, Best Buy, eBay, Target and Walmart.
The study indicates that both genders prefer mobile websites over apps, but men were slightly more likely to use retail mobile apps than women. For retailers and e-commerce businesses, this shows how critical it is to optimize your mobile platforms so consumers can easily navigate and purchase items.
Why do you think mobile websites are more popular? Are people unwilling/too lazy to download the app? How do you prefer to shop?
